Homeo students protest against detention system

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH June 18. The Government Homeopathy Medical College students formed a human chain and staged a rasta roko at ITI circle here on Wednesday demanding withdrawal of the detention system in homeopathy courses.

The college students' association president, M. Adiseshu, opposed the detention system stating that the students who failed or could not write an examination in any year during the course would lose six months. Demanding withdrawal of the detention system, he said only one student of BHMS first year in Cuddapah passed in the March 2003 examinations. He demanded revaluation of answer sheets of all the first year students.

The SFI State joint secretary, N. Chandra Reddy, lamented that several students were leaving studies mid-way on account of the detention system, after joining the homeopathy medical college basing on EAMCET ranks. It was improper to introduce the detention system only in Homeopathy course and not in any other professional courses. The SFI was supporting the ongoing agitation by homeopathy students, he said.

The SFI district secretary, B. Manohar, said detention system was in vogue for 21 medical colleges in the State, which had 3,000 students and wondered why it was introduced only for homeopathy courses. He also demanded addition of 10 grace marks in every subject for students who wrote the homeopathy exams in March 2003. The protesters raised slogans against Commissioner of Homeopathy, Janardhana Naidu.

Homeopathy students would launch a relay hunger strike in front of the Collectorate on Thursday, they said.
