HOSUR, JUNE 18. Prabha Engineers (PEL), a Rs. 15 crore group and engaged in producing front-end structure (FES) to Ashok Leyland, plans to become a system supplier for Ashok Leyland (ALL), according to C. Siva Kumar, Chief Executive, Prabha Engineers. The company, a small scale unit established in 1981, has specialised over the years in supplying sheet metal auto components for the truck major. The major products manufactured are front-end structures (FES) for heavy commercial trucks of Ashok Leyland and rear load bodies for cargo and Defence applications for the domestic and export markets. It has a unit in Sidco Industrial Estate, Hosur. Mr. Siva Kumar told this correspondent that earlier the company was engaged in assembling FES with components supplied by Ashok Leyland. There were 175-180 components that go into the FES system. Prabha started procuring 73 components from various vendors of Ashok Leyland and in a month's time it would add another 50-60 components to its fold. The balance would be procured later thereby becoming a system supplier for ALL. "And if it is convenient, we will start manufacturing in our factory and the vendors will become Tier II for Ashok Leyland" he said. The company bought a sick unit from Indian Overseas Bank adjacent to its unit for expansion. The group has three types of businesses. Apart from the manufacturing unit at Hosur, it has a retail outlet for Titan and Tanishq and a department store in Thanjavur. Prabha Engineers has recently bagged the ISO 9001:2000 certification for its quality management system by International Standards Certifications Pte. Ltd.
