VVS Horata Samiti to resume stir

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY June 18. The Veerashaiva Vidyavardhaka Sangha (VVS) Sadasyatva Horata Samiti, seeking enrolment of new membership, has resumed its hunger strike to protest against the decision of the VVS.

The VVS Managing Committee had decided to limit the membership to 1,000, inclusive of 669 members. As per the decision, only 331 new members would be admitted.

Mr. Maridevaiah, Convenor of the samiti, accused the Managing Committee of "wilfully" dilly-dallying over the issue after promising to enrol new members. He demanded the resignation of the sangha President and MP, Kolur Basavanagouda, and the sangha Secretary, Allam Doddappa, for "misleading" the members.

The samiti, after staging a dharna, intensified the agitation by launching a hunger strike. The stir was called off after six days when Mr. Basavanagouda and other-office bearers of the sangha promised to look into their demands.

He said no decision had been taken by the Managing Committee despite there being a demand for enrolment of members since 1994.

The agitators alleged that the committee wanted to delay the enrolment to avoid giving voting rights to new members. The term of the present set of office-bearers would end in six months.

Mr. Maridevaiah said the samiti was exploring ways and means to see that the Managing Committee changed its decision and allowed enrolment, at least in Bellary District.

He said efforts were on to collect documents and evidence of "misappropriation" of funds and forward the same to the Government with a demand to supersede the sangha.

When contacted, Mr. Doddappa said the decision of the Managing Committee was final. As per the decision, applications for new members would be distributed from June 20 to 25. "All details, including criteria for enrolment, will be worked out by the Committee. However, after receiving applications, it may decide to increase the number," he added.
