India seeks full participation of Pakistanis in mela

By Our Staff Reporter

JAMMU JUNE 18. India has asked Pakistan to ensure participation of people in large numbers from across the border in the Baba Chambiyal Shrine mela to be held on June 26 in keeping with tradition.

Despite strained relations between India and Pakistan, every year thousands from both sides of the border, irrespective of religious faith, gather in the last week of June at the forward post in the Ranbir Singh Pura sector to pay homage to the Baba in whose memory the shrine was built.

The mela used to be jointly organised by the Border Security Force personnel and the Pakistan Rangers. But, last year was an exception and the mela was a low-key affair.

Due to "Operation Parakram" people from Punjab province of Pakistan could not participate in the mela. The area where the shrine is located also witnessed large-scale shelling.

The Inspector-General of BSF, Jammu Frontier, Dilip Trividi, said: "The annual mela will be held on June 26 and we are keen that people from across the border also participate in the mela."
