LONDON: Novelist and convicted perjurer Jeffrey Archer will be freed next month after serving half his four-year jail sentence, the Parole Board for England and Wales decided on Wednesday. Lord Archer, author of best sellers including Kane & Abel and The Prodigal Daughter, and a former high-flying Conservative Party politician, was convicted two years ago of lying in a 1987 libel case against a newspaper that reported he'd slept with a prostitute. A jury unanimously concluded that Lord Archer asked for a false alibi and used a fake diary in the libel trial, perjured himself in an affidavit and lied under oath. The parole board did not explain its decision to grant the parole request, but said that in considering parole applications, it took into account the seriousness of the offence and the risk of further offences during the parole period.
