Mercury menace

Sir, — In its clarification on the disposal of mercury wastes in Kodaikanal ( June 14 ), Hindustan Lever says that the discharge of approximately 75 kg a year of mercury into the atmosphere is far less than the 140 tonnes released in the U.S. every year. HLL tries to cover up the actual situation by comparing two things that just cannot be compared. Does HLL say that the damage that may have been caused to the workers in the Kodai factory or the residents by the discharge of mercury need not be taken seriously? Does the company also say the physical constitution of an average Indian is the same as that of an American so that the former could withstand and suffer no harm as a result of the discharge?

Has the Pollution Control Board done its duty by measuring the level of pollution periodically and taking necessary corrective steps at the appropriate time?

V. Krishnamoorthy,
Tiruchi, T.N.
