Letters to the Editor
Sir, __ Permanent membership of the Security Council will be of no avail to India as long as countries like the U.S. are arbitrary in their approach and refuse to honour even majority decisions of the Council and flout them with impunity on account of their armed might and economic power. It is unfortunate that the U.S. still calls itself a guardian of democracy in the world while transgressing universal laws of morality. Unity of nations has become an empty slogan and has ceased to be an instrument for guaranteeing peace.
V. Muthukrishnan,
Sir, If India sends its troops to Iraq, it will only mean that it has succumbed to U.S. pressure. After having dubbed the U.S.-led war as `ghor nindha', people will only take this as `ghor apamaan' to our national pride. Even politically, for the BJP it might mean adverse effect on their electoral fortunes as the Opposition will not lose the opportunity to brand them as friends of evil.
Bishu Prusty,
Sir, The present regime in Iraq is illegitimate as the U.N. Secretary-General proclaimed just before the war. The occupiers must leave immediately. The U.S.' task to `destroy WMD', and depose Saddam Hussein is accomplished. The reconstruction must take place under U.N. aegis. The aggressors should bear the reconstruction cost. Iraq will be better placed under U.N. supervision. Also, Indian troops should function under the U.N. flag. No Indian blood should be shed to help U.S. hegemony.
Kuruvilla Keericattu,
