Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
Incidentally, her mother, Dakshina, happened to be liver donor, marking a rare feat of adult-to-child liver transplantation in the State. Mrs. Dakshina, a physics lecturer, parted with a slice of her liver to give Pranali a rebirth. Mohammed Rela, of King's College Hospital at London, who performed the complicated procedure on the child 10 days ago told newsmen that the operation lasted almost 11 hours during which Pranali suffered a cardiac arrest and the surgery had to be stopped for two hours. It was next to impossible to revive Pranali after the cardiac arrest, he said. He said Pranali had recurrent attacks of jaundice since she was two and a half years old. Tests carried out at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) revealed that she was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver in an advanced stage. Transplantation of the liver was considered only way to save the child. The Bhat family had heard about Global Hospitals successfully performing liver transplantations in association with King's College Hospital and decided to contact it. Dr. Rela, who figures in the Guinness Book of World Records for transplanting a liver in a five-year-old baby, was flown to the city for the purpose.
