Cable fault affects MTNL services

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JUNE 14. Due to a major fault in a telephone cable near ITO this morning, the entire trans-Yamuna area virtually remained cut off from the rest of the Capital for over two hours.

``It was around 9 a.m. when an important optical fibre cable that runs along with an electricity cable on the old ITO bridge caught fire in the morning. As a result, almost all the phones of trans-Yamuna areas were badly affected for at least couple of hours,'' informed the MTNL's Executive Director, K.H. Khan.

Senior officials immediately rushed to the spot and it took two hours before the affected telephone lines were transferred to through "alternate route'', thus partially restoring the connectivity, he said.

``It was only late in the afternoon that the MTNL employees managed to completely rectify the snag. In fact, they replaced the entire damaged cable thus fully restoring the network,'' said Mr. Khan.

The MTNL's Executive Director, however, did not suspect it to any act of sabotage. "It was just a case of a fault which affected our network,'' he added.

Notably, this is the second time in a week that the telephone services of the MTNL were disrupted. Earlier this week, the services in Delhi's VVIP area were affected due to a major fault in the Rajpath telephone exchange which had affected telephones of even the North and South Blocks and other important Government installations.
