Action against five more AIIMS doctors soon

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JUNE 14 . A day after the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) governing body dismissed three doctors for "prolonged unsanctioned leave,'' the hospital authorities are awaiting reports in the case of five other doctors for a final decision. Inquiries against the five erring physicians are underway and a decision will be taken soon.

Action had been initiated against three doctors -- A.K. Padhy, former Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Renu Gupta, Additional Professor, Radio Diagnosis, and P. Mandal, Additional Professor, Department of Anesthesia -- all of who have been dismissed, while two increments of H.P. Pati of the Department of Hematology have been blocked.

According to the rules, a doctor can take leave for a total of five years for research and higher studies. However, they are not allowed to take leave for over two years at a stretch. With every five years of service, the doctors are allowed to take a year's leave.

The move, which is seen as a bold step by the Institute's governing body, is justified by the authorities on the ground that of the 450 doctors at AIIMS, 40 are on leave at any given time and several physicians have been staying away from work without prior approval of the competent authority. And since these doctors remain on the rolls, seats are blocked and promotions come to a standstill.

``The situation had lead to a lot of frustration within the faculty and we knew action had to be taken against the doctors who in some cases did not even reply to our notice,'' explained AIIMS PRO, Shakti Kumar Gupta.

Meanwhile, inquiries against the other `black-listed' doctors are being conducted by T.S. Oberoi, a former Additional Sessions Judge and also a former member of the Central Administrative Tribunal.
