The directorate decided to complete the single-window counselling system for medical colleges and courses ahead of engineering counselling, so that students eligible for both streams could make a final, informed decision, the DME said. Previously, students admitted to engineering had to join classes while waiting for finalisation of medical admissions. The decision to advance the admission process has also to do with a recent Supreme Court judgment, directing the Medical Council of India governing body for medical education to complete all medical and para-medical admissions by July 31 and begin classes on August 1. Transfers and change in institutions could be taken up later, it said, but directed authorities to complete all admission procedures by September 30. However, with the MCI issuing fresh guidelines frequently, counselling here could be delayed by a few days to accommodate the revisions, the DME said. Some of the new guidelines came after the university and course prospectus had been prepared. Besides, the number of medical and related seats in the State was yet to be finalised as MCI approval for courses and colleges was still awaited, she said. The Tamilnadu MGR Medical University has scheduled a meeting for next week to deliberate on MCI revisions and finalise the admission dates. About 13,000 applications were received for medical and dental courses and about 12,000 for para-medical seats . The last date for submitting applications was June 11, but the directorate was still receiving forms sent by registered post, said the DME.
