Reading out a resolution made at the district general council meeting here today, the district secretary and former Minister, Veerapandi Arumugam, said the council expressed its ``deep anguish and shock over the murder of Kiruttinan, who had been a leading Dravidian leader in the southern districts of the State since 1967.'' Kiruttinan had been a Member of Parliament twice. He served in the Rajya Sabha too for a term. When the DMK leaders were put behind bars during Emergency, Kirutinan was sent as a special emissary to Jammu and Kashmir to meet the then Chief Minister, Shiekh Abdullah, and to mobilise support for the party. Kirutinan held the district secretary post of Ramanathapuram east and later became the secretary of Sivaganga district. It was a great loss to the party. The Salem district DMK shared the grief with the wife and relatives of the slain leader, Mr. Arumugam said. The principal secretary of the DMK high command, Durai Murugan, attended the meeting as an observer. The Salem district unit is the first to hold its new council meeting after the DMK's recent general council meeting in Chennai. Mr. Arumugam has been elected the Salem district secretary for the seventh term.
