Kalam calls for water conservation

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 14. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has appealed to the citizens, water management authorities, government and non-government organisations to conserve water in the light of the drought-like situation prevailing in the country.

The President said the country had had a very hot spell this summer. "Probably, the ordeal is over and very soon we will be getting, hopefully, abundant rains. We have to anticipate and prepare ourselves for facing floods and undertake measures through which we can channelise and store surplus water for future use.''

Appealing for harvesting of surplus water during the rainy season for a better tomorrow, Dr. Kalam said that most of the States had a large number of ponds and tanks, many of which had gone into total disuse. "It is time we desilt, repair and re-operationalise these on a war-footing. By foresight we can convert any natural calamity into a new opportunity,'' he said.
