Farm official released unharmed

By Our Staff Reporter

ADILABAD JUNE 14. The two-day old kidnap episode involving the Agriculture Extension Officer, Bhooma Reddy of Mudhole mandal, came to an end when he was released unharmed on the Andhra Pradesh-Maharashtra border late last night.

Reports reaching the headquarters said the victim who was released from captivity came back to his house and called up the Bhainsa police station. The police immediately asked him to come and report at the police station. The Additional SP (Operations), Devendra Singh Chauhan, and the Nirmal DSP, Vidyasagar Rao, spent the entire day in Bhainsa planning rescue operation after they got definite clues about the kidnappers.

The Adilabad SP, Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat, told The Hindu that Mr. Bhooma Reddy was whisked away to the Bhokar area of neighouring Maharashtra State by a pseudo-naxal gang led by one Ganesh of Navipet mandal of Nizamabad district.

The gang members, who abducted Bhooma Reddy, allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs. 2 lakhs.

The SP said the same gang had in 2000 extorted about Rs. 10,000 from the same official. Three gang members were arrested in the aftermath of the extortion case and the trial was on. The same gang again started their extortion activities in the backward Bhainsa and Mudhole areas. As part of their plan, they kidnapped Bhooma Reddy, hoping to make easy money.

The police heaved a sigh of relief on the safe release of the abducted official. The police continued their operation to nab the kidnappers.
