NID may get `deemed university' status

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD JUNE 14. The National Institute of Design, the only institute of its kind in the country, is expected to get the "deemed university'' status.

The institute's governing body, on Friday, decided to prepare "documents'' for seeking the deemed university status. The meeting set up an expert committee and requisitioned the services of the Society for Education and Economic Development, made up mostly of the former University Grants Commission members, to assist it in preparing the documents.

According to the NID Executive Director, Darlie O. Koshy, the Department of Industries and Commerce had already agreed in principle to accord the deemed university status to the institute and once the documentation was completed, the proposal would go to the Union Cabinet for approval. He believed that the process would be completed in about four months.

In the academic year beginning from June 16, the NID has increased its student intake in the post-graduate level from 95 to 142 this year and added two new courses — Information Design and Interface Design — which would not only make the design education more contemporary but help the software industry to move up in the value chain and develop more value-added software and digital products. Among the major design projects under implementation of the NID are designing of office space for the Karnataka Vidhan Soudha, the Karnataka Assembly secretariat in Bangalore, redesigning of the Roheric Estate Museum, Bangalore and information kiosks for the Karnataka farmers, and Raitha Mitra Kendra. The NID had been commissioned for developing a master plan for celebrating the centenary of the Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata, later this year and designing a "monetary museum'' for the Reserve Bank of India in Mumbai taking the viewers through a numismatic collection through centuries to the modern era.
