Mixed luck for UP

By Our Sports Reporter

HUVINA HADIGALI (Bellary) May 24. Uttar Pradesh had mixed fortunes. UP boys overcame a spirited challenge from Tamil Nadu before prevailing in five engrossing sets 24-26, 25-15, 25-21, 25-27, 15-13, while its girls went down to host Karnataka in the quarterfinals of the Rangabharathi sponsored 11th Mini National volleyball championships at the GBR College courts here today.

Karnataka girls won 25-13, 19-25, 25-14, 25-27, 15-5 in just under two hours.

UP boys probably met their match for the first time in the championship.

Karnataka girls pulled off what could easily be regarded as the upset of the tournament when it toppled the calculations of U.P. With its performances hardly convincing in the earlier rounds, U.P. did presume to have an easy outing. But Karnataka girls led by Vandana made an effort and it paid dividends.

The results: (quarterfinals):

Boys: UP bt Tamil Nadu 24-26, 25-15, 25-21, 25-27, 15-13; Manipur bt Haryana 25-19, 25-22, 25-15; Madhya Pradesh bt West Bengal 26-24, 25-20, 25-17; Karnataka bt Kerala 25-17, 25-18, 25-16.

Girls: West Bengal bt Maharashtra 25-15, 25-5, 25-11; Karnataka bt Uttar Pradesh 25-13, 19-25, 25-14, 25-27, 15-5; TN bt Rajasthan 25-13, 25-12, 25-10.
