Astra test-fired

BALASORE MAY 9. The Indian missile programme today reached a new high with the successful first-ever test-firing of the Astra air-to-air missile.

A prototype of the sleek missile was test-launched from a ground-based fixed launcher with the help of a booster engine at about 12.15 p.m. from launch complex number two of the Interim Testing Range here. Powered by a solid propellant, the missile has a striking range of 25 to 40 km giving it a beyond visual range interception capability. Top defence research scientists, who witnessed the launch, described it as ``highly successful''.
