Amendment okayed

NEW DELHI MAY 8. Parliament today approved a Constitutional Amendment Bill empowering the Centre to impose tax on a vast number of services and share the revenue with the States.

The Constitution (95th Amendment) Bill, 2003 was passed by the Rajya Sabha by a majority vote and not less than two-thirds of the members present. The bill would bring services explicitly in the Union List and pave way for the inclusion of services within the purview of the State-level Value Added Tax system. Excepting the AIADMK, all the principal parties, including the Congress and the Left, supported the bill.
