All final year students of NLSIU get jobs

By Nagesh Prabhu

BANGALORE MAY 8. The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) students have been offered jobs even before completing their academic year. All the final year law students have secured jobs in reputed companies and legal firms.

Law firms such as Amarchand Mangaldas, Luthra & Luthra, DSK Legal, Economic Laws Practice, Nishith Desai, and Majumdar and Company have offered jobs to the final year students.

Companies such as Reliance India Ltd., Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Escorts, HDFC, Arvind Mills, and Infrastructure Leasing Finances (ILFs) have also recruited students through campus interviews, Vandana, member of the Recruitment Coordination Committee (RCC) of the NLSIU, told The Hindu on Thursday.

This year 55 final year law students will pass out from NLSIU. Of them, 10 to 15 students will go abroad for higher studies. The rest have decided to go for jobs and all of them got it through the on-campus recruitment programme, according to Ms. Vandana. Most of them preferred to join reputed legal firms. Legal firms offered Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 35,000 a month while the others offered Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 a month.

"The Law School started the placement programme in a systematic manner for the first time.

Our placement is nearly cent per cent. Whoever has sought placement has got it. Our track record is as good as those of IITs and IIMs, although we operate on a much smaller scale and with meagre resources compared to them," said A.Jayagovind, Acting Director, NLSIU.

To help students of the final year make a well-informed choice, recruiters were asked to make available to the RCC details about themselves, their work, qualities and criteria sought for in an employee, the proposed pay package, and other relevant information.

Representatives of the legal firms and companies hold pre-placement talks (PPT) and provide detailed information about their companies.

"Each student will be allowed to apply to a fixed number of recruiters which is determined based on the number of recruiters who confirm their participation in the campus recruitment process.

The recruiters are free to interview and conduct group discussion of candidates applying to them," Ms. Vandana said. The final year students undergo internship in reputed legal firms to learn professional skills and ethics.

Students of graduating batch (2003) completed internship in organisations such as Hindustan Lever Ltd., ARA Law, Berjis Desai, CZB and Partners, UTI Bank, ICICI Bank, and Reliance India Ltd. The final year students underwent at least three internships, she said.

The NLSIU was imparting legal education, which was not only relevant but would also contribute to the overall social development.

From the second year onwards, students would start working with lawyers, legal officers, and social agencies. When .they complete the course, they would have acquired a good understanding of law in action and law in books, Mr. Jayagovind added.
