A lapse in a Nimzo Indian Defence opening by Ravi gave Scanny the opportunity to create a massive pawn centre. Scanny smelt the positional superiority by a pawn breakthrough. Youngster M.M. Anandraj of Chennai missed a chance to meet IM G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank. In a game of Cambridge Springs of Queen's Gambit the game was drawn in 68 moves after Anandraj had held the upper hand for long. R. Siddarth of Chennai held IM Murugan of LIC to a draw in a Trompovsky game in which the latter could not capitalise on an extra pawn and the game petered out into a drawn knight and bishop ending. Along with this tournament, the organisers, Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering, is conducting the Chellammal Palani Gounder State championship for women till May 14. Top players like Asian champion IWM M. Kasturi, WFM Safira Shanaz, M.R. Sangeetha of Chennai, Y. Pratiba of Kancheepuram and Ishwarya Shobana of Selam are taking part.
