SRINAGAR MAY 8. The coalition Government headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today faced resentment from an unexpected quarter. It was a protest demonstration by the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Youth Federation, the youth wing of the CPI (M), which supports the coalition Government and is also part of the People's Democratic Forum (PDF), its constituent.

Over 1000 youth assembled in the Sher-e-Kashmir Park here and wanted to move towards the Secretariat to hand over a memorandum to the Government highlighting its demands which include lifting of ban on Government jobs and ``unnecessary harassment'' of the youth in Kashmir.

Police, however, did not allow the demonstrators to proceed. But the demonstrators took a different route to the Chief Minister's residence on Moulana Azad Road, which led to a traffic jam. Police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the demonstrators, who raised slogans against the Mufti Government saying that it was ``insensitive'' to the ``burning issues'' in Kashmir. At least four persons were injured.

The DYF leaders, Mohammad Amin Dar and Mohammad Yaqub Ganai, addressed the rally and castigated the Government for ``failure'' to address issues concerning the youth. The Government had ``forgotten'' its promises and it should formulate a comprehensive employment policy and put an end to harassment of youth. The demands highlighted in the memorandum, which was handed over to the Chief Minister, include the release of frozen Central vacancies, providing allowance to unemployed educated youth, rehabilitation of the victims of disappeared persons and of violence.
