Meet on chemical weapons

LONDON MAY 8. The British Foreign Office Minister, Denis MacShane, led his country's delegation at the first Review Conference of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in The Hague, held between April 28 and May 9, a press release said.

The conference assessed the progress made globally on the implementation of the Convention since its entry into force on April 29, 1997. Dr. MacShane delivered the British policy statement on April 29.

This was intended to help further reinforce the United Kingdom's overall objective, both for the Conference and wider implementation of the CWC. Britain tabled a total of 11 papers at the Conference, by far the largest contribution of any State party, covering a range of policy and technical issues that are intended to provide the basis for a re-affirmation of the provisions of the Convention and to open the way for possible resolution of important implementation issues.
