Official language status sought for Tamil

NEW DELHI MAY 7. The Rajya Sabha today witnessed an unusual bonhomie between the DMK and the AIADMK over making Tamil an official language of the Union. The MPs of both parties joined hands to press for the demand raised by the AIADMK member, P.G. Narayanan, through a special mention.

Stating that Tamil is one of the oldest languages, Mr. Narayanan said the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, had written several letters to the Centre to include Tamil in the Eighth Schedule along with Hindi and English and also declare it as a classical language.

"It is not a political issue and we proudly associate ourselves with it," the DMK members led by Vidhuthalai Virumbi said adding that Tamil qualified to be declared as a classical language as it fulfilled the criteria prescribed for it.
