CHENNAI, APRIL 30. Officials of the CB-CID today conducted searches in the office of Tamil biweekly Nakkheeran and the editor's residences in the city and at Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district. The simultaneous searches started around 11.30 a.m. and ended at 4.30 p.m. When contacted, an officer of the special unit confirmed the searches, but did not divulge the details, including the case in connection with which the police operations were conducted. The searches came on the heels of the detention of the editor, R.R.Gopal, under the Prevention of Terrorism Act after he was arrested under the Arms Act and for charges of sedition. He was later arrested in connection with the case of murder of one Rajamani in the Sathyamangalam forest, allegedly by the forest brigand, Veerappan's gang in 1998. The police officials searched the Nakkheeran office on Jani Jan Khan Road, Royapettah, the editor's house at Apparao Garden, Kilpauk and his ancestral home at Arupukkottai and the residence of the news editor at Venkatakrishna Nagar Extension at Adyar, here. A magazine staffer said the police had seized copies of old issues, particularly those which contained Veerappan-related stories, books authored by Mr. Gopal and some photographs.
