Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
The Government was ready to consider the postgraduate medical students' demands for hike in stipend and withdrawal of the tuition fee hike. However, as for the students demand that no private medical colleges be allowed in the State, the Minister said it was the Medical Council of India which was vested with the powers of granting approvals for new colleges. His clarification came in response to a special calling attention motion raised by Opposition MLAs. The MLAs said the order issued by the State Government liberalising rules for starting medical colleges had caused concern among the students. The Government should invite them for talks without any pre-conditions. Welcoming the Minister's announcement for talks, the agitating medical and dental college students said they were optimistic that the Government would find a solution. ``If a satisfactory solution is arrived at, we are ready to get back to classes from that moment,'' the Tamil Nadu Medical and Dental Student's Association said in a statement. However, they have decided to continue with the last day of the three-day relay fast tomorrow. Into the eighth day, another batch of students continued the second day of relay fast all over the State. They also held parallel outpatient centres in Government hospitals for the sixth day.
