Priority for working class will continue: CM

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI APRIL 30. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, and leaders of political parties extended their greetings and well wishes to workers on the occasion of May Day tomorrow.

The Chief Minister said the Tamil Nadu Government was aware that the world could progress only through workers. The Government under her leadership had been giving priority to the working class and would continue to do so.

The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, said it was a day of celebrations in nations, where rights of workers were honoured. But in States where their rights were neglected, May Day would only be a ritual. Nothing would move in the universe in the absence of cooperation from the working class, and the ruling class should realise this fact.

The AICC secretary, G. K. Vasan, regretted that the working class was slowly losing its privileges, which it had won through a struggle. In Tamil Nadu the working class was ``paralysed by repressive measures'' adopted by the State Government. He wanted the working class to unite to get back its rights.

The CPI State secretary, R. Nallakannu, and the CPI (M) secretary, N. Varadarajan, have appealed to the working class to prepare itself for a prolonged united struggle to oppose globalisation and privatisation, which were out to deprive workers' of legitimate rights.

The TNCC president, S. Balakrishnan; the working president, E. V. K. S. Elangovan; the PMK leader, S. Ramadoss, and the MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, were among those who greeted the workers.
