The AISBOA secretary general, K. Venkatesan, said in a statement today that the strike call was premature as even the "preliminaries have not started for wage settlement". Noting that the real reason for the strike call by the Federation was "something else", Mr. Venkatesan said the newly-formed association registered under the Trade Unions Act wanted better wage scales and service conditions than those acceptable to the Bank Officers Federation and the Indian Banks Association and the AISBOA had submitted its charter of demands. A better deal for profit-earning banks was not possible in the industry-wise wage settlement. "We have demanded bank-wise wage settlement as the stronger banks cannot be equated with the weaker ones in paying capacity", he said. Further, the 11,000 officers who opted for VRS were given a raw deal by the last-minute denial of benefits under the Government scheme. The AISBOA, which had written to the SBI Chairman seeking adequate protection for non-striking officers, was a registered union with provision for enrolling both serving and retired officers. Mr. Venkatesan demanded that the association, which was for bank-wise wage settlement cum pension settlement, must be invited to the negotiating table.
