By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI APRIL 25. Nearly 30 per cent of the motor vehicles plying on city roads "do not have proper documents and the latest ownership are not recorded in the RC book", according to the Chennai City Traffic Police.

The legal requirement of informing the RTO at the time of selling or purchasing an used vehicle was not being met by the motorists, a police press release said. "As per the Section 50 of the Motor Vehicles Act, whenever a motor vehicle is sold or transferred, the transferor should report it to the RTO within 14 days of the transaction. The person who receives the vehicle should also intimate the details of the transfer to the RTO within 30 days".

Similarly, as per the Section 49 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the owners of motor vehicles should intimate change of address to the RTO within 30 days.

Noting that the traffic police would verify the ownership and the latest address particulars of motor vehicles, during checks, from May 1, the release said.
