Govt. school's e-way to glory

By R. Ravikanth Reddy

HYDERABAD April 25. A year ago, she never touched a computer. But now, S. Srimayi, a 9th class student of Railway Girls High School, Lalaguda, is capable of preparing a computer-based project on functioning of the heart with downloads from the Internet. An amazing change for the girl, whose tryst with computer began just a year ago.

She is one among several children, who have discovered the power of computer-based learning, thanks to the initiative taken by the school Headmistress, V. Indira, and other teachers.

No wonder, the school was declared the proud winners of the Intel award for the `Best integration of technology in education' at the national level under the Government Schools category. The multinational company, Intel Inc, instituted the award. Hundreds of schools competed for it.

The school got a grant of Rs. 50,000 under the award and it would be spent to further improve the facilities in the computer laboratory. The school is one of the 11 institutions elected under the `Schools Online' programme, supported by the American India Foundation.

``This award is a recognition to the efforts of our teachers who have integrated computer technology to their daily teaching,'' says Dr. Indira. "It has brought an appreciable change in the learning process of students and the 10th class results this year would reflect that.''

Using the technology, the teachers and students prepared projects on various topics using multi-media effects making it a "playful-learning'' affair. Projects covering over 100 topics in all the subjects have been prepared so far. Dr. Indira says they now want to convert all the projects into CDs so that they can be used forever.

``What satisfies us is that we got the award competing with top Kendriya Vidyalays where computer education is a must,'' says Dr. Indira.
