Rs. 9,620 cr. Annual Plan for Karnataka

The Karnataka Chief Minister, S. M. Krishna, with the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, K.C. Pant, in New Delhi on Friday.

NEW DELHI APRIL 25. The 2003-04 Annual Plan for Karnataka was finalised at Rs.9,620 crores on the basis of identifiable resources at a meeting here on Friday between the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, K.C. Pant, and the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna. This included an additional Central assistance for special schemes.

During the discussions, Mr. Pant appreciated the measures taken by the State Government for the successful implementation of the Kisan Credit Card Scheme, improving the human development indices, and for taking innovate steps to encourage information technology.

Noting the steps taken by the State for reducing the dropout rate at the primary school level, Mr. Pant said the benefits of development should ensured to better delivery of health, nutrition, education, drinking water and housing schemes.

Mr. Pant termed as positive the initiatives taken in the irrigation sector, including the system of levy and collection of water charges and bringing them within the jurisdiction of water user societies.

He suggested that the State should aim at sustainable growth of IT and biotechnology while attaining high standards in bioinformatic education and research and development in biotechnology to make it a flagship State in this field.

Noting that the State had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Power to affirm its commitment to bring in reforms, Mr. Pant said that the Planning Commission had taken steps to prepare a State Development Report in partnership with the State Planning Department. He said a core group had been constituted for this.

On drought, Mr. Krishna said that the Government had spent Rs.50 crore under the Calamity Relief Fund and the National Calamity Contingency Fund. The Government would waive interest on short-term cooperative credit for kharif crops of 2002.
