BJP best bet for achieving separate Telangana: Vijayashanti

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD April 25. Film star and BJP Mahila Morcha national vice-president, S. Vijayashanti, has said that it is her stand to carry on an uncompromising struggle in the direction of ensuring that the BJP emerges the main alternative political force in the State and Telangana achieves its Statehood keeping in view the welfare of people of the region.

These were the twin objectives she had in mind for the State, Ms. Vijayashanti stated in a press release in an obvious reference to speculation about her joining the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) following a reported meeting with its president, K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

The film star-turned-politican chose to react to media reports in this regard. She said when there was an opportunity to develop the backward Telangana through a separate State "it has to be done.'' She had expressed the view earlier and was committed to it even now.

Telangana was backward for generations and for several years the Governments in the State had issued statements which amounted to mere `eyewash' because they had done nothing concrete for its development. The pathetic plight of villagers and farmers of the region affected by drought and other problems would move anyone with concern for humanity. Telangana was subjected to negligence of rulers and exploitation for decades.

Therefore, Ms. Vijayashanti said everyone had to respond to the situation regardless of politics and political affiliations.

She said the BJP had resolved earlier for separate Statehood for Telangana. This was an important reason why she had developed an affinity for the BJP. The BJP-led NDA Government had done something the previous Congress regimes at the Centre could not do by carving out smaller States of Uttaranchal, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh.

The State BJP was trying for a congenial atmosphere as far as Statehood for Telangana was concerned in view of the understanding between NDA partners on the issue.

She urged the TDP to understood the feelings of the public and their response to the thought of creation of a separate State for Telangana while taking a decision in the matter. It was also necessary that the TDP considered the suggestion of the BJP.

She would press on with her own efforts in this direction, Ms. Vijayashanti maintained.
