Syndrome (SARS), Singapore today became the first country to enact legislation to try and contain the spread of the disease by providing for deterrent punishment for those who might put society at risk. The Infectious Diseases Act was strengthened for the purpose at a sitting of Parliament under a special Certificate of Urgency. Hefty fines and/or detentions at a hospital or some other place will now apply to those who might break home-quarantine orders. Jailing is also provided for in certain cases of irresponsible behaviour. The SARS-related death roll in Singapore is 17.
