Fernandes expected to call on Jiang

By P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE April 25. The Indian Defence Minister, George Fernandes, is expected to call on the Chairman of China's Central Military Commission and the former President, Jiang Zemin, in Shanghai. The meeting is considered important in the context of Mr. Jiang's current official position as the concurrent Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the powerful Communist Party of China.

Mr. Fernandes, who is now in Shanghai on the final lap of his week-long visit to China, despite the prevalence of the SARS disease there, has already called on the Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao, in Beijing, besides holding talks with his Chinese counterpart, Cao Gangchuan.
