Govt. sailing smoothly, says Mufti

By Luv Puri

Jammu April 25. The nearly six-month-old Jammu and Kashmir Government is sailing smoothly but challenges still remain and the coalition Government, with the cooperation of the people in the country, will strive to take the State out of the present morass, the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, said today.

Talking to The Hindu here, he said the PDP-led Government was formed after a "universally acclaimed free and fair election" and the people had demonstrated their courage by voting and proving their faith in the democratic process. "We have tried our level best to rise up to the expectation and aspirations of the people of all the three regions of the State." The Government had tried to reach out to every one affected by violence. The people had identified with the Government of the day and this was the biggest positive sign of the six-month period.

Referring to terrorism in the State, he said those who were on a killing spree had no reason to indulge in such despicable acts. "Enough is enough and the time has come for a sincere dialogue. The time has come when people must put pressure to get these violent acts stopped." The outgoing Governor, G.C. Saxena, in his farewell message to the people of the State, said people had made many sacrifices for the restoration of peace and it would not go waste. Paying tributes to the people who had lost their lives in the decade-old violence, he said,

"It is due to the efforts of these people we are hoping that peace will return to the State. Civilians and politicians need a special mention for their grit and courage in meeting the challenges."

Mr. Saxena's five-year tenure will end on May 1.
