At a panel discussion organised by the United States Information Service in Madras, Mr. I.J. English, Manager of the Standard Vacuum Oil Company, said urgent steps were needed to reduce, through industrialisation, the pressure on land in India. India had many more people living on land than it could properly support. The average Indian had a per capita income of Rs. 203 per year. He consumed annually 13 sears of milk and ate 376 pounds of foodgrain.
