5 indicted for plot to kill Musharraf

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD APRIL 24. An anti-terrorism court in the port city of Karachi has indicted five men on charges of plotting to assassinate the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, in April last year.

Among the five are two members of a banned outfit sentenced to death for a car bomb attack outside the U.S. Consulate in June, which killed 12 Pakistanis.

The court has charged the five with terrorism and criminal conspiracy to murder Gen. Musharraf.

The police case is that the accused had parked a pick-up truck on a busy commercial road to blow up Gen. Musharraf's car when he was visiting Karachi on April 26, 2002 to attend a rally in support of the April 30 Presidential referendum.

Prosecution has argued that the same vehicle was later used in the June attack outside the U.S. Consulate. All the five — Mohammad Imran Bhai, Hanif Ayub, Arslan Sharib Farooqi, Muhammad Ashraf and Waseem Akhtar — pleaded not guilty. Mr. Akhtar was a member of Pakistani Rangers — a paramilitary force.

Abdul Waheed Khan, Public Prosecutor, has said that the accused would face a maximum punishment of life imprisonment if they were convicted.

He has said prosecution would produce nine witnesses and hoped the trial would be over in a few days.
