Medicos boycott govt. hospitals

Chennai April 23. Medicos in the State launched an indefinite strike today even as the Government announced that talks would be possible only if the agitation was called off.

Students of medicine and dentistry, house surgeons and non-service postgraduates stayed away from work in government hospitals, vowing not to return until the State acceded to their demands, including reduction in the "inordinate" hike in fee for courses, grant of increase in stipend and permission against setting up new colleges. The government move to allocate seats for non-resident Indians would prevent deserving and poor students from pursuing their degrees, the students felt. Though they brought the issues to the attention of the Government several times, there was no assurance from the authorities.

The Director of Medical Education C.Ravindranath, said the strike had not affected work in government hospitals. "All regular doctors reported for work and we have mobilised sufficient staff members to carry on the work without interruption. None of the operations was cancelled and emergency facilities were on alert," he added.

He reiterated that the Government would not meet student representatives for talks, unless the strike was called off.

However, the students said they would continue the strike with the same intensity until their demands were met. Students of Stanley Medical College, Kilpauk Medical College and Madras Medical College here threatened to stage a demonstration outside the Director of Medical Education's office in Kilpauk tomorrow.
