Nitish Kumar reduces freight rates for salt

NEW DELHI APRIL 21 . The Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar, today announced major concession in railway freight for transport of non-refined edible salt and a review of the occupancy rate in the prestigious Janashatabi trains introduced last year.

Replying to demand for grants of his Ministry in the Lok Sabha today, Mr. Nitish Kumar said the reduction in freight rates for salt will be in the range of 10 to 25 per cent depending on the distance and would come into effect shortly.

He said as many as 16 Janashatabi trains were introduced last year virtually covering all the States.The Railway Board is currently conducting a review of the occupancy levels in these trains, indicating that the trains where the demand from passengers was low could be scrapped. Meanwhile, members from Tamil Nadu, flayed the Ministry for poor allocation of funds for guage conversion projects in the State.
