He will hold talks with the top Chinese leaders and visit military establishments. His visit might help provide a strategic thrust to the Sino-Indian relationship, depending on how his prospective talks in Beijing and Shanghai proceed. However, his arrival in the Chinese capital, amid the looming crisis over the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak, could be seen as a goodwill political gesture from the Indian side. Mr. Fernandes is likely to hold talks with his Chinese counterpart, Cao Gangchuan, besides calling on Jiang Zemin, Chairman of China's Central Military Commission and the country's President until recently.
