1,000 houses hit by quake in China

Beijing: The strong earthquake that jolted Delingha city and surrounding areas in north-western Qinghai province did not cause any human casualties but damaged over 1,000 houses, the state media reported on Friday. The earthquake, measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, struck the sparsely populated region at 8:48 am local time on Thursday. The tremor inflicted serious damage on the homes of 45 local farmers and left over 1,000 houses cracked and broken. It also resulted in the deaths of 12 sheep. The local Government has provided 45 tents for victims. The quake did not affect heating or drinking water, officials said. The epicentre is believed to be approximately 50 km from Delingha at 37.5 degrees north and 96.8 degrees east, according to China's seismological forecast network.
