Govt. steps to ensure smooth movement of commodities

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore April 17. Vegetable prices, which had gone up in the City following the lorry strike, showed a marginal fall on Thursday, though higher in many cases than during normalcy.

The lorry owners' strike entered the fourth day with tankers transporting LPG also joining the stir.

The State-level Task Force met and reviewed the situation in Bangalore and across the State.

"There is no improvement in the movement of heavy vehicles on inter-State and intra-district routes.

"But LPG and petroleum products are moving as usual,'' according to the Commissioner for Transport, T.Thimmegowda, who heads the Task Force.

All departments had taken adequate measures to ensure the smooth movement of essential commodities, he added.

There was no panic buying of petrol in Bangalore and no unusual rush at the petrol bunks, most of them reporting adequate stocks till next week.

HOPCOMS had made arrangements to procure and distribute vegetables and fruits at all its outlets.

It had adequate stocks. Arrivals of vegetables improved in the wholesale markets and prices stabilised.

The Transport Commissioner asked farmers to take the help of local RTOs and APMC officials to transport their produce to markets.

APMC officials had been directed to discuss with the traders and organise transportation for potatoes and onions to other States by rail.

``The Government is reviewing the situation on a day-to-day basis to ensure smooth supply of all essential articles.

"People need not panic, as there is sufficient flow of essential commodities to the market."

In case of any problem, they could contact the Control Room on Ph: 2253717, Mr. Thimmegowda said.
