By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore April 17. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) can now go ahead with new contracts for garbage removal, with the High Court of Karnataka disposing of writ petitions filed by a number of existing contractors.

The High Court has ruled that the existing contractors have to wind up their operations by May 19 after which the Mahanagara Palike can issue work orders for new contracts according to stipulations in the tender, according to counsel for the Mahanagara Palike, Ashok Harnahalli.

According to the new conditions, the garbage contractors will be more accountable to taxpayers.

They have to obtain signatures from two residents on each street that the garbage has been satisfactorily cleared, each day.

The contractors will also be responsible for clearing and transporting any debris on the roadsides. Other stipulations that the garbage contractors have to follow include 100 per cent door-to-door collection of waste from households and commercial <243>establishments.

They also have to pay minimum wages of Rs.60 per day or Rs.1,800 per month to sanitation workers, as prescribed by the Labour Department.

They have to employ the stipulated number of lorries and workers for each health ward of the Mahanagara Palike.
