Gang relieves woman of jewels

CHENNAI APRIL 17. A gang posing as police personnel relieved a TNPCB woman employee of her gold jewellery totally weighing about 16 sovereigns at Guindy this morning.

The police said, when the victim, Vanaja (53) of Madipakkam alighted from a van and was walking towards her office, she was confronted by the gang.

One of the members allegedly claiming to be a policeman informed her that the area was prone to crime and to keep her jewels in her bag.

Though Vanaja initially refused, they convinced her to remove her gold chain and bangles and keep it inside her handbag.

The gang members then diverted her attention and snatched the jewellery. They sped away in a waiting autorickshaw.

The victim made an attempt to follow the autorickshaw in another autorickshaw but the culprits managed to escape.

The JCP (South) J.K.Tripathy said that a special team had been formed to trace the culprits.

"It is unfortunate that the victim was unable to note down the registration number of the autorickshaw used by the culprits to flee from the spot, in which case police could have easily traced the accused", he said.
