Satish, Noorul go bonkers

By Our Sports Reporter

Tamil Nadu captain R. Satish drives Bihar spinner S. Nadeem while wicketkeeper Kamal Kumar looks on, in the National under-25 inter-zonal tournament match in Bangalore on Thursday. Satish made 216.

BANGALORE April 17. Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh went on a rampage against Bihar and Punjab respectively in the under-25 inter-zonal cricket tournament semifinals here on Thursday. Tamil Nadu's skipper R. Satish lead from the front at the WAP grounds while MP opener Mudassir Pasha held centrestage at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Resuming at the overnight score of 149 for one, Tamil Nadu went on to post 592 for three at close of play. Earlier southpaw Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan (130, 127b, 19x4, 2x6) scored his century despite the needless mix-ups he had with partner Noorul Riaz. A run out seemed a distinct possibility before better sense prevailed and Vidyut steered seamer Sumit Panda towards third man to notch up his century. However, the same shot finally undid Vidyut as a diving Sandip Vig at gully picked up a sharp chance and helped Panda take his revenge.

But there was no relief in sight for the harried Bihar bowlers as captain R. Satish and Noorul Riaz shared a 334-run third-wicket partnership at a blistering pace. Seamer Panda did keep Satish quiet for a while, but it was just the calm before the storm as the Tamil Nadu skipper (216, 239b, 29x4, 2x6) despatched left-arm spinner S. Nadeem for two successive sixes and then punched him back for four.

At the other end, Noorul (156 not out, 257b, 13x4) joined the party, latching onto the longhops offered by Anil Kumar. Off-spinner Mohit Goel dismissed Satish at the fag end of the day but the effort came a little too late for Bihar. Tamil Nadu already has a 348-run first innings lead and with just a day's play remaining, a berth in the final is a foregone conclusion.

Pasha in ominous form

Having played a match against Mumbai on the same turf, Madhya Pradesh scripted its own fairytale run in the tourney. From 119 for one overnight, MP batsmen piled on Punjab's agony adding 259 more runs to finish day two at 378 for three in 118 overs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Mudassir Pasha has been in ominous form in this tournament and as the gritty opener notched up his third century of the tournament with flourish. Having scored 115 against Uttar Pradesh and 161 against Railways in the Central Zone league phase, Pasha's maturity as an opener was evident in this knock wherein he not only got the runs but also occupied the crease in admirable fashion.

Pasha lost his overnight partner Nitin Menon (47, 151b, 6x4) with the score at 205 after having added 140 runs for the second wicket in good time. Centurion against Mumbai, Rahul Bakshi then joined Pasha in the middle, and the two blunted the Punjab attack with some controlled aggression.

Pasha, who survived a sharp chance when he was dropped at first slip by Ankur Sondhi off Harish Puri's first delivery with the new ball, got to his 150 with a flurry of boundaries and then lofted S.P. Singh over the long on ropes. But in attempting to repeat the stroke in Singh's next over he managed to top edge to short third man allowing him to complete the catch. Pasha's 167 made in 421 minutes and 318 balls was studded with 17 boundaries and two sixes.

Bakshi, however remained unperturbed by the frequent bowling changes brought in by Punjab captain Ravneet Ricky. Bakshi punished the bad balls and remained unbeaten on 78 (165b, 11x4) at close to give MP a first innings lead of 177.

The scores:

At M. Chinnaswamy stadium: Punjab 201 in 62 overs vs Madhya Pradesh 378 for three in 118 overs (Mudassir Pasha 167, Rahul Bakshi 78 not out, Nitin Menon 47, Sachin Dholpure 28).

At WAP Grounds: Bihar 244 in 60.4 overs vs Tamil Nadu 592 for three in 122 overs (R. Satish 216, Noorul Riaz 156 not out, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan 130, Jesubabu Honeymen 48).
