Stalin gets conditional bail

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI APRIL 17. A magistrate court today granted conditional bail to the former Chennai Mayor, M.K. Stalin, who was arrested on April 10 for allegedly trespassing into the Queen Mary's College premises here and threatening a watchman with dire consequences.

N. Venkatavaradhan, XIII metropolitan magistrate, directed the DMK leader to execute a personal bond for Rs. 5,000 and furnish two sureties for a like sum each.

He was also asked to report to the magistrate every Monday.

To be brought to court

Meanwhile, V. P. Ravindran, IX metropolitan magistrate at Saidapet, issued a prisoner-on-transit warrant to Mr. Stalin, enabling the police to produce him in court on Monday and get him formally remanded to judicial custody in connection with another case, of violence at his Velacherry residence prior to his arrest.

The police registered the attempt to murder case against Mr. Stalin, alleging that he instigated his party cadres to attack the personnel who had gone to Velacherry to arrest him in connection with the QMC episode.

When Mr. Stalin's bail application in that case came up for hearing today, F. Akbar, I additional sessions judge, posted it for Monday following a request from the city public prosecutor, T.V. Ganesh, who found some `legal lacuna' for seeking an adjournment.

Habeas corpus plea withdrawn

Earlier in the day, a habeas corpus petition filed in the Madras High Court by the arrested DMK MLA, S.A.M. Hussain's son, S.M. Abdul Khadar, was disposed of as withdrawn.

When the petition came up before a Division Bench, comprising Justice P. Shanmugam and Justice S.K. Krishnan, counsel sought permission to withdraw the petition `in view of the changed circumstances and also because defence has filed a bail application in some other court'.
