Bank officers plan strike for May 2

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI April 17 . Officers of all banks will strike work nationwide on May 2, seeking wage revision, pension as second option and resolution of other long-pending issues.

The salary revision agreement signed five years ago expired on October 31, 2002 and officer associations submitted a common charter seeking early settlement of wage revision as well as other issues.

The Indian Banks Association took nearly five months to commence negotiations, which also did not show progress even after six rounds. The IBA was yet to come out with a concrete offer on revision, says a statement from R.J. Sridharan, general secretary, All-India Bank Officers' Association.

The IBA had signed an agreement with all unions on introduction of the pension scheme. It was kept open for a limited period and many officers and employees could not exercise their option in time. The pension scheme was introduced simultaneously in the insurance sector and the Reserve Bank. They offered the option for a second time to ensure that all employees exercised it. A similar option was the long-pending demand of the unions in the banking industry.

Mr. Sridharan said the officers' associations had also raised the issues of payment of income tax on perks and allowances, anomalies in the last wage revision, recruitment/promotion of officers to meet the situation arising out of the voluntary retirement scheme, vigilance and disciplinary proceedings, and compassionate appointments.
