Much of the drainage water of Kancheepuram town, passing through the Manjalneer channel, stagnates in the Allavathi and Nathapettai lakes, causing pollution in the area. Photo: A.Muralitharan
According to residents of Thirukkalimedu, the drainage water of the entire town that used to be let into the Allavathi and Nathapettai lakes through the underground drainage channel and then treated for use in fodder cultivation a decade ago is not being treated following blocks in the channel. The drainage water is now being let into the Manjalneer channel and directly flowing into the two lakes. Adding fuel to the fire, effluents from a number of dyeing and bleaching units are also being let into the drainage carrier. As a result, the untreated drainage water could not be used for fodder cultivation and the silt could not be auctioned as `manure'. Silk weavers in Palayamedu, Reddipatti and Thirukkalimedu have already represented to the Collector that the zari used in the silk sarees got faded by using the polluted groundwater in their area. The residents have termed the Manjalneer channel the `Cooum of Kanchi' and appealed to the Collector to take steps to treat the water.
