The award, instituted by the Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust and administered by the Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS), comprises a citation and a cash component of Rs.1 lakh. Prof. Tilak, while receiving the award, would deliver the Adiseshiah Memorial Lecture in November, a Madras Institute of Development Studies release said. The awardee was selected by an independent jury, which this year comprised M.V. Nadkarni, ICSSR National Fellow, Maithreyi Krishnaraj, a retired professor of SNDT University, Mumbai, and Thomas Pantham, Professor of Political Science, M.S. University, Vadodara. Educated in Andhra University, Waltair and the Delhi School of Economics and the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi, from where he obtained his Doctorate, Prof. Tilak's inquiry argued against popular misconceptions such as returns to education of backward classes were low. His study also justified the view that rates of return were generally above the corresponding rates for the non-backward classes, which, in turn, was attributable to the lower costs of education of these groups. This was attributable to the lower costs of education of these groups.
