This Day That Age
In Quilon on the 17th, the Rajpramukh of Travancore-Cochin inaugurated the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam. In his welcome address, Dr. P. N. Narayanan recalled that the organisation, started on March 28, 1903, had, during five decades rendered great service to emancipate the backward classes including Ezhavas in Kerala. Swami Vivekananda had remarked about Kerala when he visited it that it was a land of lunatics, as he had found the practices of unapproachability and untouchability prevalent in Kerala so disheartening. The incessant efforts of the Yogam had completely changed that sorry state. At a time when people kept away from the so-called untouchables, an Ashramam for them was started. There they were admitted and educated causing a revolutionary change in the whole outlook, quite a while before Mahatma Gandhi took up the cause of Harijan uplift. Three processions, one starting from Arivipuram carrying the Sree Narayana Jubilee Flag, another starting from Ernakulam and carrying the image of Sri Narayana Guru, and the third taking Mr. C. Kunjuraman, President-elect of the Jubilee sessions, had reached the Ashramam maidan earlier. Sree Narayana Guru's image was installed in the Mutt.
