A rare achievement

Pune April 17. A child prodigy from Pune has achieved a unique feat of becoming the youngest to have been conferred with the ``4th Poom Black Belt'' in Taekwondo by the Sang Rok World Taekwondo Academy Seoul, South Korea recently.

Brandon Paul Fernandes, achieved the feat at the tender age of 12 years, six months and five days.

Narrating his experience and the difficulties that he had to undergo, Brandon said that considering the freezing climatic conditions prevailing in Seoul at that time ``it was more than a challenge''.

The examination was held at the World Taekwondo Federation Headquarters ``Kukkiwonn'' in Seoul, South Korea between November 15 and December 2, 2002, under the Director Master Chang Seong Dong. The results however were announced on March 5, 2003.

The feat is all the more creditable since Brandon was the sole Indian entry among the 400 Koreans who went through the rigours of the examination.

His father and mentor Richard who is also a fourth Dan black belt and runs the Brandon Taeokwondo Academy in the city had trained his son in the art of Taekwondo since the tender age of 1.
